Awarded by the Council of the Hospital Pharmacy Specialty College of the Order of Pharmacists
"The parenteral nutrition in the field of oncology" was the subject of the winning study of the 2021 edition of the Biojam INOVAR Award in Hospital Pharmacy, presented by the Council of the Hospital Pharmacy Specialty College of the Order of Pharmacists on the 19th of last month, as part of the XIV Hospital Pharmacy Conference.
Awarded to Manuel Morgado, a hospital pharmacist at Centro Hospitalar da Cova da Beira, this is an award that, according to the author, "serves as an incentive to continue working on research projects and to do more and better, particularly in the field of pharmaceutical oncology, an area in which the authors have a particular professional, academic, and scientific interest. This award will contribute to signaling and drawing attention to some practical guidelines in the scope of parenteral nutrition in oncology and, thus, to better treat our oncological patients."
According to Manuel Morgado, also a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FCS-UBI), it is estimated that, according to some studies, about 50% to 80% of oncological patients present malnutrition. "It is essential to have some guidelines that can be applied early and effectively in the clinical practice of healthcare professionals who are part of the multidisciplinary team involved in the prescription and monitoring of parenteral nutrition for oncological patients," he adds.
The study constitutes a review of various knowledge and guidelines that are important for the hospital pharmacist and for the treatment and monitoring of oncological patients who require assisted clinical intervention, particularly in parenteral nutrition. Once the oncological patient is evaluated and parenteral nutrition is established, it should be monitored frequently.
This was a project that received the support of Fátima Roque, Professor at the School of Health Sciences of the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda, and Cecília Mariano, a hospital pharmacy specialist at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Assunção - Seia, from the Local Health Unit of Guarda.
For Carlos Monteiro, CEO of Biojam Holding Group, "the creation of the Biojam Innovate Award was and is another contribution that we want to make to research, publication, and dissemination of scientific works in some areas and always with the scientific management and selection of articles by the Medical Societies of the specialties to which these awards belong."
